When I discovered that the Make a Wish Foundation was looking for interior designers to help make wishes come true, I volunteered my services. It wasn’t long before I meet a 7 year old sweetheart of a girl whose wish was a room makeover. She had a very clear vision of what she wanted, and she overcame her shyness to tell me how much she LOVES hot pink and rainbows.
On her wish list was a Smart TV, bean bag chair, captain’s full size bed, a place for all her stuffed animals (she received a lot while in the hospital,) and hot pink and rainbows everywhere. Her mom’s wish was to take up the green wall to wall carpet.
I had a blast designing this wish come true. Figuring out the right mix of hot pink and rainbows ended up being easier than I thought it would be as soon as I found the perfect rainbow polka-dot bedding. I chose to put hot pink on the ceiling and a lighter pink on the walls. Once the white furniture was in, it toned down the intensity, and adding an area rug with both pink tones tied everything together.
When I create my designs, I make sure that my clients will enjoy their space for a long, long time. With this long-term outlook, I know this currently 7 year girl will be able to enjoy her new bedroom all through her teenage years and even once she goes off to college. The My Little Pony wall decals can be removed without any harm to the walls as soon as she outgrows them.
My favorite part of the whole process was seeing this cutie pie jump up and down, squealing with joy when I unloaded the car filled with her wishes.
