My client’s uninspired fireplace recently got a total make over with a few inexpensive changes. This fireplace went from a dated look that dwarfed the room and made the ceilings seem low, to being a clean, sophisticated design. The new fireplace even draws your eye up making the ceiling seem higher than before.
All it took for this fireplace transformation was having a carpenter remove a few embellished wood moldings from the mantel which came off fairly easily. The mantel then needed some light sanding and a fresh coat of paint but simple change updated the look.
To go a step further I had the carpenter add a small piece of decorative molding vertically from the top of the mantel to the ceiling. Then the interior space was painted in the same white as the mantel along with the newly added molding. This made the fireplace look as though it goes to the ceiling which brings your eye up. It’s a lot like wearing vertical stripes to elongate your body so you seem taller.
The new window treatments complete the make over by framing the fireplace. It is now the focal point the redesigned room deserves.
