Recently, a client called me to help them remodel their bathroom. This couple’s story is a cautionary tale.
Ten years ago, they began a remodel of their master bedroom suite, which included a bathroom that had gone so wrong it ended up unusable. They were frustrated, threw in the towel and for ten years! They lived with a non-functioning bathroom. This time, they called me to get it right. Below are some hints to help you get your bathroom remodel done right:
DON’T:
Look at stunning photos of other people’s bathrooms and think, “I want that!” and order it. What works for one layout will not necessarily work in your space.
DON’T:
Begin a project with no or very little knowledge about plumbing, functional capabilities and/or fixture limitations. This was the case when the client learned (after the fact) that the Jacuzzi tub they installed did not really function as a shower. Oopsy…
DON’T:
Hire the person your neighbor recommended to do the construction. I have heard this sad story so many times and I wish it were unusual, but it is not. This cautionary tale involves a client who hired a crack head…yes a real crack head. He was sober when they first met and continued to be sober during most the project. However, at the end they discovered he had a real problem and their project (which they had paid for in full) was never going to be completed. This can happen even with contractors who are not crack heads.
DO:
Hire a designer to get the best layout that maximizes your small space!
DO:
Research your options. If you are playing the role of designer, do your homework and learn everything before you pay one cent to a contractor.
DO:
Get referrals and recommendations. When you have decided on a contractor, call at least three of his previous clients. It may take longer and be a little inconvenient but dealing with a crack head that is only occasionally sober is worse!
Every room in your home should function but your bathrooms are most important. Can you image not being able to use your master bathroom for 10 years because of a few mistakes? Don’t let this happen to you, hire a designer and ensure it doesn’t.
