In my interior design business I offer clients my Finishing Touches Design Package, which takes care of their entire accessory needs. This final step of accessorizing is just as important as placing the furniture. Hanging a few pieces of art can make a house feel like home. Naked walls are the worst!
There are occasions when displaying decorative plates make a welcome change from traditional art. I will take you step by step through the best way to hang a plate arrangement. We start the how to hang a decorative plate arrangement after having gather plates that are different in size and pattern but have a color scheme which unifies them.
In this example my clients Dining Room has a tight color scheme of red, blue, and champagne color which were all taking from the gorgeous hang made area rug. This was the first item we found for the room and served as the jumping off point for all other elements in the room. With red walls the Blue and white decorative plates really pop and create a statement.
Once you have gathered all the plates you want to use in your arrangement, and you’ll notice I used a decorative bracket or scones as the center point. I did this to dress up the look and add another layer of interest. Having all the materials to hang is the key to figuring out the best placement.
Next you will need a large piece of paper, if you need to piece small pieces together to make one big enough that will work just fine. This large piece of paper is your template. It will make hanging quick and easy, and avoid making mistakes which leads to a lot of extra holes in your wall.
I suggest using a dining table for this template making part. Lay down your large sheet of paper and begin playing around with the plates to find how you will want them on the wall. Now when you have that arrangement outline the placement of each plate in pen or pencil.
The next step is attaching the invisible plate hanger to the back of the plates. I could not find these in any store by me and tried all the big box stores. I had to order them on line, but I much prefer the invisible plate hanger to the old fashion metal plate hangers. The directions are easy and clear to follow and printed on the back of the card that come with the plate hanger.
Now that all your plates have their invisible hanger backings on, it’s time to figure out where the picture hanger holes should go in your walls. My trick is to use a tiny dab of paint on the metal ring of the plate hanger and place that on the paper for a quick second. You now know where the metal ring is since it has left a mark on the paper to act as your guide.
Now you are ready to hang with confidence! Your template paper will be taped up on the spot you want your plate arrangement to go. Then you’ll nail your picture hangers where the paint dab indicate. Remove the paper, hang your plates, and enjoy the master piece you have created for years to come.
