Getting Exactly What You Want with Custom Design
As a designer I love being able to create new custom products for my clients. When designing a teenage boys room for one of my good clients I knew the best way to go for the area rug would be one of my trade sources for custom handmade wool rugs.
The design process started with showing my client some small rug samples to choose design and style. We chose a bold geographic print which allowed for 3 colors to used in the design. Next we chose colors grey, black and white, and placement of those colors from a pom box. A pom box is a collection of yarns in the different colors available to use, kind of like pantone colors are used in graphic design and printing.
Then we requested a rendering or drawing from manufacture to see the design in the colors we chose. Once that was approved we got a one foot square of the carpet for final approval. In this case my client changed her mind when she saw the square sample. We had originally wanted a hand tied kilim style, which is a tight thin rug made in 100% wool. When my client got to see the small sample she realized what she actually wanted was a soft plush rug, so we switched to a hand tufted style still in 100% wool. When we got our next sample in the new style my client knew that was the right way to go and so a custom 7’ x 9’ area rug was made.
The result is stunning, and grounds the room as a stylish finishing touch. Being able to create products like this one of kind totally custom area rug is one of my favorite parts of my job.
