It Reminds Me Of…

It Reminds Me Of…

I have been doing interior design for about 14 years now, and it’s amazing how many times I have heard clients say “It reminds me of…”  It doesn’t matter how the client will finish that sentence, it always means the same thing – it’s out, eliminated, not going to work for them.Sofa, table and fireplace

I have heard some pretty interest things from clients of what a fabric or product might remind them of over the years.  There have been some reoccurring themes and some creative ones too.plaid

There have been a few people who can’t have plaid in their home since it reminds them of Catholic School.  I have also heard a lot of, it reminds me of my Grandmother – that is the kiss of death for whatever it maybe that we were looking at.bead trim

I recently helped a teenage with her bedroom and in finding the right trim for the window treatment we eliminated one beaded tassel because it reminded her of the trim of a Mariachi Band player’s hat.

I love that I get to work with so many wonderful people with all different life experiences.  As a good listener I tune in to what my clients are staying and feeling.  As soon as I hear that phase “it reminds me of”, I take note and quickly move on so we find what will work.  It doesn’t matter if that was the fabric that I liked best; “it reminds me of” trumps anything else.chair
